Luxembourg Bourscheid Castle Europe

The romantic ruins of Bourscheid Castle stand on a promontory 500 feet above the River Sure. The fortress dates from the the 10th Century when a stone castle with a hall and keep was built inside a circular wall to replace an earlier wooden structure. A longer wall with eight towers was built in the mid 14th Century, followed by more defences in 1477. Abandoned in the early 19th Century, the castle was in a ruinous state when acquired by the state in the 1970s. Restoration work is in progress, and it is now open to visitors.
