Mr. Hughes is one of Englands cleverest writers and bestmen. He was educated first at Rugby, where the celebrated Latinscholar, Dr. Arnold, was Master, and then at Oxford University;and his School-days at Rugby and Tom Brown at Oxford arespirited and truthful accounts of his own school-life. These bookswill be read with delight by young and old for years and years tocome. Mr. Hughes has also written several other works, which areequally entertaining in their way, if they do not contain quite asmuch hearty- fun as the college stories. After graduation, Mr, Hughesstudied law, attained a high position in his profession, and finally be-came a member of the British Parliament, where he distinguishedhimself by his wise and liberal actions. He has always been a sturdyfriend to America,
