Dogfish skin. Light micrograph of a section through the skin of a lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). The surface (top) is covered in sharp placoid scales (dark purple), which are also known as dermal teeth or denticles. The scales are anchored in the dermis (brown) by spines. Beneath the dermis are blocks of muscles (red). Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
