The form of voltameter, by means ofwhich an accurate result may most easily be obtained, is constructedas follows: Take four pieces of naked copper wire, size No. 12. Twoof these pieces should be 1 m. long, and two of them ^ m. long, the wire with sandpaper and make it up into four spiral coils, the long piece into coils about 8 cm. in diameter, and the short piecesinto coUs with a diameter of 4 cm. each. Pass each coil through theflame of the Bunsen burner to remove the oil due to the hand, andplunge it into a dilute solution of sulphuric acid and then into the coils thus prepared as shown in Fig. 277. (2) The bichromate battery previously Fig. 277. MLECTBOLYSIS 313 (3) Two beakers, large enough to contain the coils, when mountedas shown in the figure, and a sufficient quantity of the solution ofsulphate of copper (density between I-IO and 1-18) to immerse the coUs. Procedure: (a) Weigh all four coils as carefully as possible; then mount themas described, connect them with wires so that when the current flowsit will pass in each case from a large to a small coil, leaving thecircuit open at one terminal of the battery. Fill the beakers withthe solution until the coils are entirely submerged. Close the circuitat a time carefully noted by means of a watch or other the current to run for. thirty minutes before breaking circuit, and note the time again. (6) Remove the coils from the solution; dry them carefuUy byrolling them on pieces of white filter paper, then by dipping intostrong alcohol and again rolling on filter paper. The alcohol willquickly evaporate,
