Tuesday's Great Cricket MatchâA Close and Exciting Contest Resulting in Favor of San Francisco. The largest attendance of ladies and gentlemen who have yet watched a cricket match on this Coast, and withal the most fashionable audience which has yet gathered at any ath- letic event here, was present at the Oakland grounds of the Olympie Club, on Tuesday, to witness the contest between the officers of H. M. S. Swiftsure and a team selected from the Occident and Merions of this*city. A gentle hint in a recent number of the Breeder and Sportsmax seemed to have had the desired effect, for play was commenced sharply on time, and from the moment the wickets were pitched, to the time of drawing stumps, the game was watched with the closest attention and most impartial discrimination by the large audience, who applauded every good play, both of the land-lubbers and the British Tars, and were mercifully un- demonstrative over the few "muffs" ; Bristowe was elected captain of thn combined team, and on tossing with H. Dawson, captain of the Swiftsure team, was sent to the bat by that gentleman. Deane and Ben Benjamin were the 6rst to wield the willow for the San Francisco's, to the bowling of H. Dawson and Luard. In Dawson's second over the Merion Captain managed to hit wicket in attempting to play a puzzler from that bowler and J. Theobald rejoined Deane 1 for 3. Dawson is one of the most effective bowlers ever seen on this Coast, having a won- derful command of the ball. In the preliminary practice he twisted the ball all around the most scientific of the Occident batsmen, and had he not thus allowed the San Franciscans to note these peculiarities, would have doubtless been much more destructive.
