CONTRASTS WITH CATTLE In cattle, there are eight incisor teeth on the lowerjaw, and none on the upper. The two central incisorsare named as in the horse; the next two, one on eitherside of the central incisors, are called internal laterals;the next two, one on either side of these, are called theexternal laterals; the remaining two are called 58 The Care of Animals The temporary incisors in cattle are erupted, or cut,as follows: The central incisors or nippers are up atbirth, the internal lateral at one week old, the externallateral at two weeks, and the corner incisors at threeweeks old. They are replaced by permanent incisorsapproximately as follows, though they vary much morethan in the colt: The central incisors are replacedat twelve to eighteen months; the internal laterals atabout two and a half years ; the external laterals atthree to three and a half years; and the corner incisorsat about three and a half years.
