The exact measurementfor this is obtained by measuring from the insideof the groove, which was formed in backing, to thewidth of the first leaf of the book—not of the end-papers. This size should be taken with the wingcompass, and then pricked off on to the millboard. A PRACTICAL BOOKBINDING. 57 line is then drawn through the marks, and the boardsare cut through in the press as before. The head ortail may next be cut exactly at right-angles to theback and fore-edges. To ensure this, use the try-square as a guide in drawing the lines across the boards, and test them from both back and fore-edge to makequite sure of the truth of the angles. The length isobtained by setting the wing compasses to the lengthof the shortest leaf—or if there are any very shortones
