"Alligators" Fuel Up Off Saipan. Off the embattled beaches of Saipan in the Marianas, "alligators" and Coast Guard-manned landing barges pull up to a sea-going filling station to take on fuel. In the distance is Mount Tapachou on which Marines and Army troops gained strong ridge positions in the three-weeks battle that resulted in the ultimate fall of Garapan, the Marianas capital city.
