Violet carpenter bee, Xylocopa violacea, on a evergreen shrub of big sage, Lantana camara, from the Mediterranean Sea, Malta.

This one of the largest bee species in Europe. These solitary bees bore nests tunnels in woods, that is why they named carpenter bees, although sometimes old tunnels are re-used.
