By theconvention of Cucuta, in 1821, New Granada and Venezuela united andformed one republic under the name of Colombia, b t this unionlasted only till 1831, when these countries again sep-^rated. Ecuador,or the ancient kingdom of Quito, was then also separated from NewGranada, and since that time has existed as an independent state*Ecuador declared itself an independent republic, and established a con-stitution, according to which it is governed by a president elected foreight years, a vice-president, council of state, and a house of repre-.
