It wasstrange how differenthe felt. That was be-cause he began to thinka little, and he hadnever done it the past he had onlyeaten a great deal andjumped about and madenoises. He began tofeel as if he had al-ways been asleep andand looking about him for theHe sat still and looked out on slowly •awakeningfirst time,great grayHe looked at the deep forest which ex-tended so far that no Human Thing he knew hadever come to the end of it. In the forest livedthe wild beasts —the mammoths who trampledand tore down huge trees and shook the earthas they trod; the wolves and bears and smallthings which could be caught and eaten. Inthose days the Human Thing only thought ofanimals as enemies to kill or as food to be one knew what kindness meant, but every one knew the meaning of foes and hunger. TheHuman Thing fought against his foes, but didnot defend his brothers. No one had everthought of doing that. This day that thoughthad come into the world. It came to the Boybecause he had made something and because hewas different. As he sat with hispointed flint in his hand,he heard the sound ofa small Human Thingbehind him, and helooked round to seewhere it was. A brown,hairy baby creature wastrotting about the sand,playing and makingchuckling noise
