A military expedition was despatchedin 1S70, consisting of regulars and volunteers, under the command of Colonel (now Field-Marshal and Commander-in-Chief Lord) Wolsc-ley, but the insurrection was practically at an endbefore the arrival of the force, as the result ofnegotiations that had previously taken place, inwhich I had the honour to represent the Govern-ment of the Dominion.
