In the middle distance is a globus cruciger (orb surmounted by a cross), part of the royal regalia. The image includes a range of 1930s vehicles. Moving down the centre of the street is a number 27 double-decker trolleybus with a 'Melbourne Ales' advertisement blazoned across its front - presumably referring to the market town of Melbourne in south Derbyshire, England, rather than the city in Australia. One of the brewing sites listed by Historic England is that of a small brewery in Melbourne, Derbyshire, which belonged to a John Hair and is now a house. (Leeds & Wakefield Breweries Ltd, registered in 1889, only changed its name to Melbourne Brewery (Leeds) Ltd in 1957, long after this photograph was taken.) The trolleybus (a bus powered electrically by overhead wires) is typical of 1930s public transport in British cities. This photograph was taken by a Yorkshire married couple, George and Kathleen Blenkhorn, and comes from a Blenkhorn family album. King George VI, father of the present British Queen, Elizabeth II, succeeded to the throne in 1936 on the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Edward married Wallis Simpson and the couple were subsequently titled Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
