It furnishes a permanent form thatis both moisture and acid proof and requires no outside finish or covering. When coal is wet the sulphur content combines with the moisture to formsulphuric acid. When brought into contact with steel this acid solutionimmediately attacks it. Therefore, bins constructed of steel plates are sub-ject to continuous deterioration. To overcome this, concrete bins have beenused, as concrete is to some extent resistive to these conditions. Otherdifficulties arise in use of concrete linings, however, and to a great extentmilitate against their use in coal bin construction. However, the load inany bin is constantly changing and the concrete lining is subjected tovariable bending stresses. Small cracks appear in the concrete and the acidsquickly penetrate to the steel plate on which the concrete is supported^or to the steel reinforcement embedded in the concrete. Rusting of thesteel The purpose of theconcrete lining is onlyto resist abrasion by thecoal. In the event ofcracking uf the concreteand penetration of moist-ure to the Asbestosteel, the protective coating ofthe Asbestosteel sheetsinsures the protection ofthe bin Hning and itssupporting structure. /ifi/ Tfrr^Qf/ 7>^^i> /ijTj- f^fi^S£c-ne>^ 7f/ffi^ i:u^gfrj/^& Af^j^s^r During the appHca-tioa of the concrete lin-ings joints are providedin the concrete whichare really predeterminedcracks. They are after-wards filled with an as-phalt compound. Whenthe bin is loaded theconcrete lining bendsonly at these points. BAKER SUSPENSION TYPE OF BIN—ASBESTOSTEEL CONSTRUCTION
