X-ray of a young child. X-ray of the normal upper chest and shoulders of a young child. The collar bones (clavicles, horizontal below the skull) and shoulder joints show wide spaces between the bones, where bone growth and ossification (bone formation) must still take place to form the joints. As the child gets older, the bones will lengthen and ossify to be easily seen on X-rays and the joint spaces will close to form the adult pattern. The lungs (black) are on either side of the heart (white, centre). The ribs (white, horizontal bands) protect the lungs and heart. The spine can also be seen running down the centre of the picture.
