I., 1880 |N a recent meeting of Irving Institute an oldalumnus, now prominent in the legal profession,stated it as his belief that no portion of the edu-cation gained at the State University of Iowawas of greater value than that found in the worktaken up by members of Irving Institute. Analumnus myself of some 28 years standing, I amvery ready to subscribe to that statement, indeedmore ready now than I might have been years ago. Thestatement is true not only in its application to those whointend to take up the legal profession, but to men of anyprofession whatever. In broader application, it would betrue more especially in regard to America than to any othercountry. There is hardly any rank of life in our country where itis not now and then necessary or desirable for a man to beable to stand on his feet before an audience of one sort oranother, and not only to think on his feet, but to be ableexpress himself clearly and without awkwardness.
