The gardens are laid out with great taste, and verycarefully cultivated. On the neighbouring hill-side avineyard has been planted, and thrives very kinds of grapes are grown : the California grape,which is supposed to be the Madeira introduced into theNew World by the Roman Catholic monks; the Catawba,so called from a river of that name, celebrated by Long-(41).
