The fireoriginated in the basement, burning throughthe first and second floors, only the upperstoreys being fireproof. The offices and salesrooms were com-pletely gutted, and a valuable stock ofscales and balances destroyed. Six years ago, this firm suffered a muchmore disastrous fire than the present one.
