From the relative direction of the moun-tain ridges and of the rivers, it appears that theClutha originally ran between the Rough Ridge,Hawkdun and Ewe Mountains on the one side, and SOUTH ISLAND RIVERS 165 the Umbrella, Obelisk, and Dunstan Mountains onthe other or western side. The Waikaia ran on the western side of the lastnamed and on the eastern side of the Garvie,Carrick, Pisa, MKerrow, and Young Scale : 1 inch = 16 miles.
