Grey clouds white sun sky above salt-marsh water pool and sea ice Oystercatchers, south across Ribble Estuary to Southport, Fairhaven, Lancashire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The UK's mean December 2010 temperature was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus ten degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first cold spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The UK was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick. White sun shining through grey clouds above salt-marsh with water pool and flock of Oystercatchers on sea ice at the margins of calm seawater between Fairhaven and St Annes, looking south across the River Ribble Estuary towards a hazy Southport Coastline.
