The common rhododendron (rhododendron ponticum) is an invasive species it is a dense shrub or small tree and spreads prolifically crowding out native plant species and is therefore considered a major environmental problem and pest. Conservation groups - including the Snowdonia National Park Authority - try to clear the plants using herbicides and cutting / chopping them down each year. This image shows a section of mountainside densely covered by them.
