Various types of coal cargo-steamers. 255 The following is a list of the usual types of vessels suitablefor carrying coal:— (1) (a) Single-deck (old and new types), (b) raised quarter-deck, (c) two or three decks ; (2) trunk type; (3) cantilever-framed type; (4) turret type; (5) monitor type; (6) vesselsarranged to unload by grab-gear; and (7) vessels arranged tounload by belt-mechanism. Types 2, 3, 4, and 5 are equally applicable as types 6 and7 to be fitted up with either grab-gearing or with belt-mechanism. Types 2 to 7 are what are commonly known as Fig. 1.—Trunk Type of Vessel. (1) Single-deck Type.—(a) The old single-deck was the firsttype of boat to be built. The difference between the old andthe improved type of single-deck boat is that the bulwarks arelower and the hatches only 2 or 2\ feet higher than the maindeck, as compared with at least 3 feet higher than the maindeck in the old type of boat.
