The use of the reading roomwas open to all inhabitants of Boston of respectablecharacter and above the age of 16 years, upon theirfirst signing an agreement to observe the rules andregulations. Certificates from parents or guardianswere required in the case of minors, and for the con-duct of such minors while in the room the parents orguardian became responsible. The Library was open for the delivery ofbooks for home use from three oclock in the after-noon until eight oclock in the evening, on all dayswhen the reading room was open, except duringthe two weeks preceding the annual examination ofthe Library, which occurred on the last secular dayin October.
