Thus we held the position we had conqueredand were ten miles nearer the Southside Railroad, upon which Gen. Lee prin-cipally depended for his supplies. While the Army of the Potomac, under Gen. Grant, was gradually encir-chng Petersburg and Richmond, Gen. Sherman was cooperating in the had captured Atlanta, and from there had marched to Savannah, and wasnow advancing through Georgia and the Carolinas to unite with Gen. Grantand complete the investment of the rebel Capital. As he marched, all therailroads and resources which might aid Gen. Lee, should he retreat andattempt to prolong the rebellion, were destroyed.
