Flood gates protecting the town of Prairie du Rocher During the great flood of 1993 the towns people decided to dynamite a levee further upstream to releave the pressure on the levee s protecting the town This innovative decision saved the oldest continually habitated town in Illinois It was founded in 1772 by French soldiers stationed at nearby Fort de Chartres Many of the inhabitants fled to the west side of the Mississippi River in Missouri after the English won the French Indian Wars
