The Hornet jet fighter is officially designated by US military authorities as the F/A-18 (fighter/attack, reflecting both its air-to-air and air-to-ground abilities), but it is widely known simply as the F-18. The Canadian version is usually referred to as the CF-18 although its official Canadian military designation is CF-188.
