His widow survived himuntil 1S93. Ansel and Vienna Rankin were the parentsof: Augusta A., John H., Julia \ienna, and Austin Austin B. Rankin was born at the home farm inPelham, Mass., May 11, 1851, and educated in the pub-lic schools, finishing his studies at Powers early manhood he engaged in mercantile life, firstas clerk and assistant, becoming well-known andhighly-regarded in business circles. For S- years he. BIOGRAPHICAL 277 was manager of the largest dry goods store in Burl-ington, Vt., but his health broke and he was com-pelled to resign his position. Later he came to RhodeIsland, and at Blackstone established a wholesalemeat and provision business. Later he extended thesame business to Woonsocket, which city Mr. Rankinmakes his home. Blackstone was for years Mr. Ran-kins headquarters and home, but with the growth ofthe Woonsocket branch that city became the principalseat of his large and important business 1915 he was elected president of the NationalUnion Bank of Woonsocket; is a director of theWoonsocket Trust Company; and for a number ofyears was a director of the Woonsocket Gas Com-pany. He is a member of the Masonic order, and apast master of Blackstone River Lodge, Free andAccepted Masons. In political faith he is a Republi-can and an active and influential member of the Woon-socket Chamber of Com
