Ankle surgery. Surgeon cutting open a patient's ankle. This operation is being performed to strengthen the ankle, which was weakened by a previous injury. It involves inserting screws to fuse the ankle's talonavicular joint (where the talus and navicular bones meet). Screws were also inserted into a tarsometatarsal (tarsal and metatarsal bones) joint in the foot to relieve arthritis caused by the injury.
