An advert for Kepler cod liver oil and malt extract food supplement - it appeared in a magazine published in the UK in 1947. The illustration shows a healthy boy catching a ball. A spoonful of this product was supposed to ward off colds and winter illness while building up strength. Malt extract is a by-product of the brewing industry and is full of sugars and some nutrients, including vitamin A and riboflavin. After the war it was popular as a cheap dietary supplement for a generation of undernourished children. Unpalatable but nutritious cod liver oil which, with high vitamin D levels, could protect against rickets. It was produced by Burroughs Wellcome – vintage 1940s graphics.
