The thorax, sometimes called the chest, is bounded poste-riorly, by the spinal column, posterior extremity of the ribs,and the intercostal muscles ; laterally, by the ribs and inter-costal muscles ; anteriorly, by the sternum, anterior extremityof the ribs, and the cartilages which connect the ribs to thesternum; inferiorly, by the diaphragm, which separates thiscavity from the abdomen.
