In 1776 New Providence was taken possession of by theAmericans, but they abandoned it very shortly afterward. In 1781all the Bahamas were reduced by the Spaniards, but by the treaty ofpeace in 1783 they were again restored to the British crown. At theclose of the American war many of the Royalists transferred the re-mains of their property, including in many cases their houses, to theseislands, and since that period the number of the people and the culti-vation of the land have progressively increased. Caygos Islands and Turk Islands were formerly included in tbe 824 THE WEST Bahama group for purposes of government, but at the urgent requestof the inhabitants they were, in 1848, formed into a presidency, underthe control of the governor of Jamaica. They contain an area of 430square miles, and a population of 5,000. Salt raking is the leadingbusiness of these islands. TOBAGO. OB AGO was discovered by Columbus in 1496, andderives its name from the pipe (tobacco) used bythe natives in smoking the herb kohiba (tobacco).At an early period the British flag was planted onthe island, and James I. granted it to the Earl ofPembroke, but no attempt was made by the Eng- JJ|^ lish to colonize it.
