Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Light micrograph of a section through human brain showing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Rounded nuclei (pink) of nerve cells are seen; cell cytoplasm is grey. Between cells (at centre) are tiny vacuole spaces typical of the disease. As Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease progresses, vacuolization increases and brain tissue becomes spongy. Nerve cells are destroyed. Amyloid plaques made of protein also form lesions in the brain (not seen). Human symptoms include dementia and sudden muscle contractions, leading to death. There is concern that eating beef from \mad cows\" may cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans."
