. Travels amongst the great Andes of the equator . edge of the crater, and drifted away towardsthe north. Storms of hail were frequent ; and both here andwhen Ave were subsequently encamped at the summit, strayHashes of lightning occurred in uncomfortable if not in dangerousproximity — blazing out at unexpected times, and conveying theimpression that the atmosphere was saturated with electricity. When it was possible to work outside the tent we exploredthe neighbourhood, but our acquisitions here were less than uponany other mountain that we visited. The beetles already men-tioned, and an ubiquitous frog (Phryniscus Icevis, Gthr.) were theonly things we saw appertainingto the animal kingdom. Roundabout and below our camp therewere lichens upon the lava be-longing to the genera Stereocau-lon and Lecanora, and between14,000 and 15,000 feet therewas some quantity of a Valerian( V. Bonplandiana, Wedd.), a fewstray plants of Gentian in flower( B. K. ),and two Com-posites (Culcitium nivale 9 andSenecio hiimillimus, Sz. Bip.)..
