Only his relatives and friends, liis personal vassals and liege-men, joined the king in his private venture. The condition, however, of Italian affairs excluded success fromthe verj- beginning. The peninsula had been the prey of internalstrife ever since the downfall of the Hohenstaufen power. The ruleof Charles of Anjou (1260-128-t) was an unbearable burden for thesouth. In despair Sicilj- threw off the yoke in the massacre of theFrench intruders known as the Sicilian Vespers, in 1282, and suc-cessfully maintained its freedom, under the protection of the kings.
