Wright Flyer replica, wind tunnel tests. Replica of the Wright Flyer undergoing aerodynamic tests in a wind tunnel at NASA's Ames Research Center, California, USA. For two weeks, engineers studied the replica's stability, control and handling. It was in the original Wright Flyer that the first powered flight was made on 17 December 1903 by Orville Wright (model shown here). The replica was constructed by a team of volunteers from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics using plans provided by the Smithsonian. The materials used were mostly wood and fabric. Photographed in March 1999.
