The Democrats cast theirvote for Edward Cooper. Governor Cleveland resigned at the opening of theLegislature on January 6, and David B. Hill took theExecutive chair. His methods were in sharp contrastto those of Cleveland. He was a readier and more acuteman than his predecessor, but his political conduct wascontrolled by no such ethical principle as markedClevelands course and accounted for his fame.
