His efforts along this linewere of a practical nature, and any prospective? settler viewing his thrifty ranch was almost in-variably counted as a newcomer. As a result ofhis untiring efforts, an interest in horticulturewas established which transformed the barrenvallev into a garden spot, and during his moreactive vears his ranch and nursery were countedamong the show places in this part of the HTSTORTCAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. 551 A native of Missouri, Robert Cathcart wasborn in St. Louis in 1837, a son of Robert andHannah (LeeJ Cathcart, both of whom were na-tives of Scotland. Coming to the United Statesduring his youth, the father located in St. Louis,Mo., where as an engineer his services were ingreat demand. To him was given the credit ofbuilding the first steam flouring mill ever erectedin that now flourishing city, and in many othersubstantial ways was he identified with its earlyupbuilding efliorts. He keenly appreciated thecitys advantageous position on the river, and waslargely interested in steamboating between and New Orleans, owning the packet linewhich he ran between these two points.
