In this form the jnlorus isusually thiekened and rigidly ])atent rather than contracted. On microscopical examination, the tumor is seen to consist of numer-ous large alveoli of various shapes and sizes in a fine stroma of fibroustissue, rich in bloodvessels. While in many parts of the tumor the cellsmay be atypical in shape, one can find alveoli, generally in the deeperlayers, lined with ty))ical columnar epithelium. Colloid Carcinoma.—This type is more uncommon and represents adegeneration form. It may occur late or so early that even the growingedge of the tumor presents a gelatinous appearance. It generally in-vades all the coats of the stomach, and spreads rapidly to adjacent Fig. 40. Extcnsivo colloiil, sliDwing the incroasod thickness of the stomach of Mt. Colloidcarcinoma may appear as a circumscribed mass of light brown colorand slimy consistence.
