Mount of Olives. Jerusalem. The Mount of Olives rises to the East of Jerusalem and reaches a height of almost 2500 feet. Although never part of Jerusalem proper, the Mount of Olives is inseparably linked to Jerusalem geographically and historically. The hill received its name because it was covered with olive groves. Though some olive trees remain, today the hill is largely covered with "Jesus graves" (those who paid $$ to be there when the Messiah returns) and Christian shrines. Olivet, or Mount of Olives, is a small range of 4 summits. This is where Jesus gave the Olivet Prophecy (Matt 24, Mark 13, Luke 21). The Mount of Olives overlooks Jerusalem and the Temple Mount from the East across the Kidron Valley and the Pool of Siloam. The golden dome building is the Temple Mount or Temple Mountain. If you look at the wall and to the right, you see a gate which looks like a tower in the wall. This is the Eastern or Golden Gate, which is closed off right now. No one can enter it. Ezekial 43:1-5 says the glory of the Lord will enter the Millennial temple from the East side, where the Mount of Olive stands. In Acts 1:12 it is prophesied that Christ will return to the Mount of Olives.
