Santorini, colorful houses in Foinikia village, a "hidden secret" very close to the much more famous and "flashy" village of Oia

Foinikia is one of the most colourful villages of Santorini, reminding some villages in Mexico or Andalucia. It is not very popular among the turists, because it has no view to the caldera, and it has stayed in the "shadow" of Oia, being only 2 km away. In the picturesque and very atmospheric village, you can see many of these houses with the "arched" roof, and many "canavas", a very typical architectonic element of Santorini. A "canava", is usually a rock-cut house, "carved" in the "soft" volcanic rocks, that offer a natural "air condition". Most of them where used for wine production and storage. Nowadays, many canavas have been bought by foreigners and converted in sweet little houses.
