George McGavin, Entomologist and Research Fellow, at Imperial College and Oxford University, giving a talk entitled "What have insects ever done for us?", on the Earth Stage, at New Scientist Live 2019
Insects are the most species-rich and abundant group of multicellular organisms ever to have evolved on our planet. They were among the first animals to appear on land and the first to take to the air. They are essential to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems yet we pay them little heed. If we truly care about biodiversity and ignore insects we are wasting our time. Before it is too late, we need to realise that insects hold the key to our survival. George McGavin is an author, academic and well known television presenter. His programme credits include Expedition Borneo, Lost Land of the Jaguar, Lost Land of the Volcano, Lost Land of the Tiger, Prehistoric Autopsy, Miniature Britain, Ultimate Swarms, Monkey Planet and the multi-award winning documentary After Life: the strange science of decay.
