Several victories ov^er the Britishin Canada were the results of this training. Chippewa,Lundys Lane, and Fort Erie, all in the neighborhood ofNiagara Falls, were the chief successes; but, as the UnitedStates troops had to retreat across the river Niagara, no realadvantage was gained. Later the British invaded the UnitedStates by way of Lake Champlain, but were defeated at thenaval battle of Plattsburg. Peace had now been made inEurope by the success of the allied forces against Napoleon,who was compelled to abdicate, and was banished to theisland of Elba. This enabled England to send more menand more vessels to America. So many ships were sent thatthe whole coast from Maine to Florida was blockaded, andthe United States vessels
