In the year first named the railway companyerected a strong wooden tower, twenty-seven feethigh and of pyramidal shape, on high ground nearthe southwest corner of the Summit House. Itoverlooked all the buildings and became a favor-ite observatory. For several summers it was usedby the United States Coast and Geodetic Surveyin the triangulation of the region.
