Mining and Manufacturing. —In addition to the rawproducts of farms and forests there are valuable minerals,including salt, petroleum, coal, and iron. India has longbeen noted for hand-made goods of great beauty ; butwith the exception of these there is little manufactur-ing. Of late, however, there has been a marked develop-ment of cotton manufacturing by machinery. It is even more unnatural that cotton should be shipped allthe way to England for manufacture than that the cotton ofour Southern States should be sent to England and New Eng-land. Therefore, as the South is learning to make cotton goodsnear the cotton fields, so we may expect that the people ofIndia will in time develop an extensive cotton-manufacturingindustry in their own country.
