St. 'Valentine's day gave quite a little impetus to general business, relieving to some extent the. st^lgnation under which the florists' business has been gboring for some time. There was a rge dema'nd for violets'and the stock "yiM in sufficient BUjxply to meet all de- mlSfids. Single violets were scarce, but the supply of the double variety more than made up for lack of singles. The sale of this stock was brisk and brought fairly good prices. There was also a large demand for red carnations and these moved exceptionally well. There were plenty of carnations and all col- ors moved well, but reds were in extra demand. The prices were somewhat better than usual. Bpses have short- ened up, especially the fancy varieties. Pink and white Killarney in longer grades were most plentiful. Short stock was cleaned up quickly each day and trouble was experienced in meet- ing the demand for roses in general. Tulips, daffodils, narcissi, etc., are fine and there are plenty to go around. Valley is short this week. There does not seem to be much extra demand, but, owing to the unusually dark weather, the cut is smaller than it has been for some time. On the whole, St. Valentine's day business was quite satisfactory from a sales standpoint, but the amount of money received was away below normal. Various Notes. Mr. McDonald, manager of Gimbel Bros.' flower department, states that business has been so satisfactory since the inception of the flower department that this firm is going to enlarge the business materially in the near future. The space devoted to flowers will be more than doubled and will give ample room for a fine display of stock. Miss Schneider, with the Holton & I^unkel Co., spent the week end at Madison, Wis., where she attended the 'fProm" other festivities at the university there. H. J. S.
