Photogravure from the painting “Last Communion of St Jerome” by French Baroque artist Domenico Zampieri known as Domenichino 1581 - 1641. From “The Imitation of Christ” by Rev. William Benham, 1831-1910. published Routledge, London Zampieri 1581-1641 was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese School, or Carracci School, of painters. His work, developed principally from Raphael's and the Carracci's examples, mirrors the theoretical ideas of his friend Giovanni Battista Agucchi. It represents what would become known as classic-idealist art, which aims to surpass the imperfections of nature by developing an "Idea of Beauty" (idea del bello) through the study and imitation of the best examples of ancient and Renaissance work was commissioned for the high altar of the Congregation of San Girlando della Carità. It is one of the masterpieces of seventeenth-century painting and was, indeed, long considered second only to Raphael's Transfiguration for its combination of dramatic moment and noble expression.
