ZEBRA-HORSE HYBRIDS, 31 and when a careful examination was made, it becameevident that in tlie number and arrangement of themarkings lie was not unlike a Somali zebra. As Fig. 10shows, the brow has been tattooed as if to represent a hugefinger print. Instead of the four or five acutely pointedfrontal arches of his sire, there are fourteen roundedarches, that remind one of the face of the Somali of twelve cervical stripes, as in Matopo, there are inRomulus twenty-four cervical stripes, all of which can be f IG. In having so many cervical stripeshe seems to be more primitive than even the Somali zebra(in which I have never seen more than fourteen cervicalstripes), but closely agrees with one of my zebra mareswhen the shadow stripes are included. The shoulderstripe bifurcates higher up than in Matopo, and there areseven indistinct arches in the triangular space below thepoint of bifurcation. Behind the shoulder stripe there are 32 THE PENYCUIK EXPERIMENTS. nine (Figs, 9 & 11) fairly distinct vertical stripes instead offive, as in his sire (Fig. 7). Apparently corresponding tothe three flank stripes so often seen in Burchell zebras, there are in the hybrid three stripes in front of the stifle, which first run upwards and then arch backwards to endbelow the root of the tail (Fig. 9). Between the last verticalstripe and the great flank stripe are three ill-defined
