They imagine that Hterature, science,and general information, are unnecessary tothem; and, that if they are acquainted withthe commonest rules of arithmetic, read-ing, \VTiting, and the trade to which they arecalled, they have all the acquirements theirbusiness demands. What have we to do,say they, with polite literature, with histor},with the deeper branches of mathematics,the art of composition, eloquence, philoso-phy, &c. ? They have nothing to do withour profession; we are to get our bread bythe sweat of the brow ; and we leave thesebranches of education to the ministers, thedoctors, and the liwyers of the land.
