Snowdon Mountain Railway. Train approaching Summit station in mist and cloud. Diesel Engine pushing one enclosed carriage of the 1950's/1960's. The narrow gauge, rack and pinion railway runs from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon, first opened 1896, but accident on first day nmeant closure for 1 year before reopening 1897. It reaches an altitude of just below 1,085m. The Track covers kilometers and the journey lasts 1 hr each way. Each train comprises one loco pushing 1 carriage up to the summit. Single track with passing places. Laid to guage 800mm with double bladed rack to design patented by Dr Abt in 1882. Between 1951 and 1957 the superstructure of the original carriages was modified to produce the enclosed bodies. Each of these carriages had a capacity of 56 passengers, plus a guard. Every passenger carriage had its own set of pinions, with automatic brakes as an added precaution. If the train’s speed exceeded mph for any reason, the brake came on. Carriage No 8, now out of service, was built by Lancaster Carriage & Wagon Co. Ltd. It is possibly being pushed by Locomotive No. 9 Ninian.
