Magnets being tested at the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) laboratory. The Accelerator Systems String Test (ASST) was designed to assess the performance of the magnets of this particle accelerator in their final configuration. The ASST tests a half cell of SSC components: five dipole (bending) magnets, one quadrupole (focusing) magnet and connection spools. The 80-metre half cell is cooled to 4. 35 Kelvin ( Celsius) by liquid helium, and run with currents of up to 6500 Amps. Over 1000 of these half-cells will eventually be joined to form the 87km length of the SSC accelerator ring.
